My Business: RiverfrontCleaning

Up

Spring 2006 - I decided to get down to the bare clearcoat, and get the Eldo completely cleaned up. First, I washed her down completely, then I used a Sonus claybar to clean the paintwork. Then another wash and a final rinse down with a denatured alcohol & water mix spray.

Then I hooked up the old PorterCable 7336 Random Orbital buffer/polisher, and went after the swirls, scratches and sunbursts with some Poorboys Super Swirl Remover 2.0. The problem with black is that you'll never get it PERFECT, it's just too hard - black shows every little imperfection. And after five or so years of outdoor life and 67,000 miles of New Jersey roads, there are bound to be some. I tried to polish out the worst of the dealer-applied swirl marks and scratches. I didn't want to hit the touch-up paint unless I absolutely had to, and I only really needed it on a few tiny nicks and stone chips - applied with a toothpick, it wasn't too bad.

After the finish was about as clear as I could get it, I did the whole car with Klasse All-in-One, a very good paint cleaner and protectant. AIO removes all traces of old wax (as if there were any left..lol) and leaves a nice acrylic finish for the next step, Klasse Super Glaze, another synthetic polish/protectant.

After three coats of SG, I uncapped the Collinite 845 Insulator Wax, a very good quality, extremely durable carnuba that's only lately starting to hit the automotive and marine environments, although it's been used in industrial applications for years.
